As you may have been able to tell from all the pictures, we’re right by the shore in Kotor. And that means tons and tons of fresh seafood. Which we manage to eat pretty much every day. Here’s a report on the seafood in Montenegro, and how Montenegrins like us eat it most often!
Fish
Whole fish abound, of the kind we would call branzino and bream. They’re usually grilled and they are utterly delicious when served with the typically Montenegrin combination of potatoes and greens (a duo we love!)
There’s also tuna by the boatload. We eat this a lot in restaurants, but we also buy it at the Saturday market and cook it ourselves. We really like tuna, and this is better than nearly any we’ve ever eaten before.
Prawns, Langoustines, Gambas
Whatever you call these guys, we love ’em! We often love ’em enough to order a whole plate full. They require some work – they nearly always have heads and tails, even when served in pasta – and they are usually served with a parsley-garlic sauce that is delicious and very messy. At best, as below, they come with a pile of grilled veggies so we feel healthy as we gorge ourselves.
Squids
When calamari is on the menu, we struggle not to order it. Here in Kotor it comes grilled, with the tails separate, and over that ubiquitous greens/mashies mix. Yum!
The Whole Enchilada
Perhaps our favourite seafood dish here in Montenegro, though, is the one that combines them all. Sometimes that’s seafood risotto (red or black) or pasta. But the very most magical is a giant plate of seafood all by itself. This includes all of the things mentioned above, and sometimes more mussels, say, or octopus, or a single scallop nestled in its shell. So it’s perfect if, like us, you want to eat all the seafood in Montenegro.
As you can see, we’ve been making our way through huge plates of seafood, and we show no signs of stopping!
