On the road

We Live Here Now: Colombo, Sri Lanka!

Welcome to our latest home, this one in Colombo, with views of the Indian Ocean. It’s spacious and bright, with a balcony and even a little study nook!

Kitchen and Bathroom(s)

Our kitchen has all the mod cons, including a blender, which means soup for everyone! The gas burners are a bit wonky; it takes alarmingly long for them to light, and usually we have to turn on the back right one in order to turn on any others (even if we don’t want to use the back right one).

Yep, that’s okra you see there! Also eggplant, which you can’t quite see…

Pots are minimal, but we did manage to make first day minestrone – the strangest to date! In fact, this is almost certainly not minestrone any more. (More on food soon.) We used both our pots, the frying pan for the veg, and the pot for the pasta and beans (lentils were all we could find), and mixed them together in a bowl with boiling water until they reached something like soup consistency.

We love this sneaky pantry, which makes excellent use of space. We’ve been finding ants in the kitchen, but our very responsive host came by with the building’s exterminator, so fingers crossed.

There are TWO bathrooms, one of which we don’t really use at all. Still, why not? One of the showers doesn’t really have shelving, so we’re using the other. Once again, we need to remember to turn on the hot water before using it, but maybe this is starting to sink in and we will manage it?

Living Spaces

The dining room table is right near the kitchen and in an open plan with the sitting/living room. We’ve got one of the bigger TVs we’ve seen, comfy sofas (but alas, no extra pillows!), and a balcony with a great view of the coastline of Colombo.

Bedroom(s)

Here again, two is probably not strictly speaking necessary. But they are small, so it’s nice to keep our clothes in two different places so we’re not always bumping into each other. And each has that same great view!

And just between one of the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms is this cute little nook, which even has a window for natural light!

As if that weren’t enough, there’s also a gym and a pool on the eighth floor, both of which also have sweet views (that’s the Lotus Tower).

So we’re feeling pretty pleased about our flat in Colombo – where we’ll be for just over a month, soaking up the culture and eating as much as we possibly can!
