We’re moving on again, having spent more than a month in Colombo, and a bit of time travelling around Sri Lanka. Here are the 12 things we think we’ll especially miss about Sri Lanka once we leave.
- The rich and complicated history of Colombo and of Sri Lanka, and the ways it plays out in contemporary life.
- The spicy curries, and especially the ways people are always trying to get us to add more chilies to them.
- The friendly people – many of them are hoping to sell us something, but many others are not.
- Views of the Indian Ocean.
- The exhilarating, sometimes terrifying, feeling of riding around in a tuk tuk.
- The beautiful beaches, popular even with cows.
- The colourful temples, and also the pure white ones.
- The tea (which we now have a very large supply of).
- The fabrics worn in daily use, in the form of sarongs and saris.
- The just-caught seafood (especially the crabs)
- The freshness of the vegetables and especially of the spices; even the black pepper in a plastic bag – we are now travelling with spice blends too!
- Meeting up with elephants in the unlikeliest places (for instance, walking along the side of the road)
So there’s our list of twelve things we’ll miss about Sri Lanka! As always, we’re happy to move on, but we also think we’ll leave a little piece of our hearts here.
