On the road - Tall Tales

Get Inspired By Our New Year’s Resolutions, 2023 and Beyond

We’re big on goals, and we’re big on travel. So it is probably no big surprise that we have some travel resolutions! We’re not sure we’ll get to all of these in the next year, so it looks like we’ll have to stay on the road for the foreseeable future…

  • Learn to sail: We’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and think we might give it a go in Lemesos. We live pretty close to the harbour and there are several sailing clubs. We can’t find any one open, but we’re optimistic that we’ll sort something out. (If not here, than in some other island paradise.)

  • Drinking Turkish wines reminded us that we love visiting vineyards. So we’re hoping for more of that in the future – probably in Cyprus, Italy, and/or South America. In our long-term dreams, we will settle down somewhere and make our own wine.
  • Dive the Zenobia: Laurel learned to dive a lifetime ago; John has never done it. One of the world’s best dive wrecks is now more or less in our backyard, so we’re planning to check it out. We suspect it might make us want to do even more diving – stay tuned for more dive-related resolutions!
  • Hike the Santiago de Compostela: we’ve been talking about this for years. Probably not for 2023, but for 2024 when we return to Europe. We’ve only started looking into this, but at the moment we’re thinking about the Camino del Norte, because we like being near water. (That said, if you have any advice, get in touch!)

  • We’ve also realised how much we like long train trips. And hey, it’s not like we don’t have the time! We’re thinking about the Copper Canyon trip, the Eastern and Orient’s southeast Asia train, any number of routes through India, the Old Patagonian Express, and, obvs, the Orient Express. When we’re back in North America, we’ll take the Seattle-San Francisco train (booked for January 2022, cancelled because of COVID), and the Trans-Canada train from Toronto to Vancouver. Again, if you are a train nerd too, let’s talk.
  • We don’t focus a lot of attention on the number of countries we visit, having learned that we care about quality above quantity. But we do keep track (see the map on our main page for where we have been so far). We’re hoping to get to five new countries in 2023. Mostly, we think, that will be toward the end of the year, when we’ll make our way to South America. Though we do have a few things up our sleeve.

We’d love to hear your travel resolutions for 2023!
