We Live Here Now: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

We’re super-excited to be in Asia for a little while, and our first stop is Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Our temporary home is a little bit odd; it’s a studio apartment in a very tall building. But the building itself seems to be almost entirely private apartments leased out to short-term visitors. Maybe this is a thing in Malaysia? In any case, read on to see the newest digs!

Sitting Room/Living Room/Dining Room

Let’s call the middle part of the studio a sitting room. It’s got a sofa, a TV, and some shelving. All nice, and the sofa is more comfortable than we’re used to. As usual, there’s plenty of storage for our stuff. This flat is minimally furnished, and also minimally decorated: no books, but a few plastic plants and objets d’art.

There’s also a high table with stools. Theoretically this is our dining room table, if we can manage to keep from putting things on it.

Kitchen and Bath

The galley kitchen has two burners and a kind of combination microwave/oven. A large refrigerator, a kettle to boil water, and a water filter. Minimal dishes and pots and pans. But we have already discovered that eating out is very cheap in Malaysia and restaurants and food trucks are ubiquitous. So it probably doesn’t matter; we can’t imagine we won’t be out stuffing ourselves at hawker stalls or dim sum restaurants just about every day.

The bathroom is very small but with good hot water. As with our flat in Cyprus, we have to turn on the hot water ourselves and wait for a bit. Which is only a problem when we forget (so far that’s every time).

The washer/dryer works well. Indeed – a first for us! – the clothes come out dry from it.

Bedroom

Let’s call the place where the bed is the bedroom. (It’s all one room, you see…) There’s a table and reading light on one side of the bed, and we’ve moved one of the kitchen stools to the other side. It’s the view that wins this apartment points, a spectacular one from the 17th floor, of the Menara Tower and all kinds of other things that light up prettily at night (see featured image).

Other

We mentioned that this is a very tall building, which is lovely, except that – as we also mentioned – there are also people checking in and out with luggage at particular times of the day. And only four elevators. So we spend an awful lot of time waiting to go up or down.

On the plus side, there’s an amazing swimming pool on the 47th floor, and a perfectly adequate gym we’ve been going to every day. And in the mornings, to reward us for making it all the way down in the crowded elevator, there is a Hot Cup of Happiness. All this for less than USD $50 (£36, €42) a night. We love Malaysia: does it get better than this?
