We are in Cabo Verde for the month of February. Specifically, in Mindelo, the second largest city in this lovely little island nation, on the island of Saõ Vicente. Our flat is very large, with lots of windows and air, located right on the Praia Laghina, the swimming beach. We’re on the 12th floor of a fancy high rise in an area with lots and lots of cranes. Apparently it was mostly industrial, but mansions are starting to pop up (buy now, before it’s too late…). We have lots to say about why we’re here, but for now, our digs!
Sitting Room/Living Room
We love the colorfulness of everything in the flat. We were super-excited by all of the books too, but it turns out the majority of them are Star Trek and romance novels. (Maybe we’ll develop a taste for those, but probably not.) Sofas are comfortable; dining room table is enormous and looks out onto the balcony (we love balconies!), which is sunny in the morning.
Bedroom(s)
First of all, there are two of them! Also, tons of closet space, not that we need it. There’s plenty of Cabo Verdean art on the walls, also in bright colors, and the rooms are huge. Best of all, we have a view of the main beach of Mindelo from both bedrooms. Laurel has moved a chair over, so that she can sit right there every morning and write.
Bathroom(s) and Kitchen
We know our readers care about kitchens nearly as much as we do. This one is a winner! Gas stove, oven, lots of plates and pots and sharp knives, casserole dishes, wine glasses, and even a breakfast bar. That said, we may not be cooking as much as we have in other places, for a variety of reasons.
There are also two bathrooms! We’ve taken a picture only of one, since they are near-identical; we can bathe simultaneously, with our backs to each other, communicating by taps on the wall (or yelling). It’s lovely to have a bathtub, and this one has a jacuzzi. We haven’t had one of those in years – even hotels these days often don’t have a bathtub any more.
This is a beautiful, spacious and airy place, where we’ll be delighted to live for a month. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in Mindelo, and a couple of coffee-and-pastry shops where we can hang out. And, of course, there’s the beach. But there’s not a ton of other stuff to do, so we’re especially pleased to have such a nice home base.
