We’ve moved out of our Kotor flat, and are now in Seville, a town Laurel spent a week in once and John has never seen. (Lots more on that soon!) This flat wins most interesting to date, in a good way, on three counts. 1) the elevator opens into the sitting room; 2) the flat has four balconies; 3) it’s triangle-shaped. We think there are three right angles in the whole apartment. In any case, it’s super-cool, and we love it!
The neighborhood, between El Arenal and Alfalfa near the river, is quiet but also close to tons of restaurants, bars, and shops, and we’re near many of the main sights. The place is perfect for (HOT!) summer weather: in addition to the balconies, there are lots of curtained windows, marble floors, and high ceilings. There’s not a single carpet. And it’s very spacious.
Kitchen and Bath
The kitchen is maybe a little too big, only in the sense that there’s a lot of travel time between pantry and stovetop. (They also left us some cereal and, more importantly, liquor!) There is no oven, which limits our culinary repertoire, but not unduly. There is a grill and some good frying pans. Everything is shiny and new, and the refrigerator is so large as to be virtually American-sized! There’s a dishwasher and a washing machine. as often the mugs were sub-par, but we’ve fixed that (see above). And, again, there is no teapot – though there are two toasters.
As for the bathroom, we’ve never had a balcony in our bathroom before! There’s a shower but no tub, as usual, good water pressure. Not as much counter space as we’d like but then again, we don’t have a lot of stuff to put on it in any case!
Sleeping and Living
The majority of the Seville flat, opening out from that elevator, is a large, triangular-shaped room with two sofas and a dining room table. We’ve already rearranged them to take better advantage of the balconies and to create separate areas. The sofas are comfortable, although the dining room chairs are not. The TV only gets a few stations, but we don’t speak much Spanish anyway, so that’s a minor complaint. In addition to the usual IKEA furnishings, there is an (inexplicable) set of U2 photographs. But hey, it takes all kinds to make a world.
There are not a ton of electrical outlets, but they’re all in useful places, and the landlord has provided extension cords and multiple outlets. We’d have liked a bit more colour, but the kitchen makes up for that.
The bedroom is not very big, but it’s got good lamps and great natural light. And loads more closet space than we need.
So once again, we’re feeling pretty lucky in Seville! We could hold a small flamenco party in our sitting room, and we’re drawing up a balcony rotation to make sure nobody feels left out.
